If you've been waiting for a chance to catch an anime music concert in full — live bands, full sets, no backing tracks — this is your August.
MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2026 is rolling out an anime special broadcast on NHK General, picking up the highlights from the "リスアニ!LIVE on TOKYO ANIME MUSIC HIGHLIGHTS" event that took place at Tokyo Toyota Arena back on June 9. The show airs August 1 at 12:10 AM JST (yes, technically late-night Friday, but the anime community lives by a different clock), and it's the kind of thing that actually made me sit up and take notes.
What's the vibe?
The concert was billed as "a live-band anime music festival where Japan sends its best to the world" — and they mean it literally. Every track was performed with full live bands, no playback shenanigans. The lineup is stacked:
- Ohishi Masayoshi (known for KonoSuba and 86)
- TrySail (Rascal Doesn't Dream OP/ED queen)
- MyGO!!!!! (BanG Dream! — obviously)
- Idolmaster Shiny Colors — Meteo
- Love Live! Sunshine!! — Guilty Kiss & Saint Snow
- TeddyLoid — Special DJ Set
That's a pretty solid spread of what's actually good in the anime music scene right now. MyGO!!!!!'s inclusion is the headline grabber, but the rest of the lineup shows the breadth of what counts as "anime music" at this level — it's not all idol covers, it's original anime songs performed with real musicianship.
Can I catch it if I'm not in Japan?
NHK ONE will carry the simultaneous broadcast, and importantly, catch-up streaming will be available for one week after the initial airing. That gives you a buffer if you're in a different timezone and don't want to set a 4 AM alarm. Whether the streaming is available outside Japan depends on NHK's geo-restrictions, but at least the window is generous.
Honestly, the fact that NHK is devoting a full hour to anime music performed with live bands says something about how seriously the industry is taking this genre. MyGO!!!!! on national TV with a real band behind them — that's the kind of crossover moment that makes anime music feel less like a niche and more like a real scene. Worth setting a reminder for.
